The designation honors those who have "shed their blood for this country," says Dannie Watkins who has two Purple Hearts. Crosswalk Enforcement in Garden Grove
Watch out for those pedestrians! In California, pedestrians have the right-of-way. Drivers must stop when a pedestrian is in the crosswalk. Garden Grove Police Officers watched a crosswalk on a busy street to see how local drivers behaved as a police cadet walked back and forth after activating the flashing yellow lights. Most of the drivers obeyed the law, but over 30 were cited for crosswalk violations which could cost them as much as $200. Cash Mob At Zlaket's Market in Garden Grove
A crowd gathered recently on Historic Main Street in Garden Grove. Los Angeles Radio Station KFI, AM 640, held a "Cash Mob" at Zlaket's Market. Talk show host Bill Carroll asked listeners to come to Zlaket's and spend $20, and they came. Carroll and the KFI crew set up right in front of the store where they did their show. The family owned business has been feeling the pinch of the down economy and KFI wanted to help. The local market was jammed with people wanting to help too. The store features high-end meats, a deli and hot food counter as well as a huge selection of vintage soda pop. Zlaket's donated a percentage of the day's proceeds to the Garden Grove Boy's and Girl's Clubs. Roma Villavicencio has the story. At the end of the year, those people are invited to a dinner celebrating them and their special deeds. Captain Shoshana S. Chatfield graduated from Pacifica High School in 1983. Recently she landed her helicopter at Pacifica High School and talked with students about her career in the U.S. Navy. Later in the day she spoke to the Garden Grove Elks about Naval Operations. Chatfield is Commander of the Helicopter Sea Combat Wing of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. She is a helicopter pilot and instructor. Captain Chatfield credits her high school teacher for inspiring her to go on to serve her country. Eileen Moore is an Associate Justice for the California State Court of Appeals but more than 40 years ago she was a registered nurse serving in the Vietnam War. As the second speaker in a FREE Speaker Series hosted by the Vietnam War Museum of America Foundation, Moore shares her wartime experiences including the challenges she faced as a nurse in Vietnam in 1965.
