The Garden Grove Community Foundation kicked off their summer concert series with Fleetwood Mac tribute band, Rumours. People, young and old came out to sit on the grass and listen to music, picnic, dance or just relax at Eastgate Park. A wide variety of bands have been scheduled for the 5 Wednesday evening concerts. The last one of the season will be August 14th featuring The Answer performing classic rock. Local high school singers begin the program each Wednesday as they compete in The Voice of Garden Grove. Officers test their skill in a series of turns at slow speed on bikes that can weigh over 800 pounds. Festival Amphitheater Fundraiser
Garden Grove's Festival Amphitheater hosted a star-studded fundraiser recently. The entertainment was a 1940s style radio show featuring James Cromwell, Robert Foxworth, Rene Auberjonois, Robert Hays and many others. Attendees enjoyed a sunset onstage dinner and a chance to rub elbows with the stars. After the sun went down, the actors put on a show complete with singers and serious sound effects. Shakespeare OC is under new direction with John Walcutt at the helm. Walcutt wants to see the theater become more accessible to the general public. 2014 Great Wolf Lodge Groundbreaking in Garden Grove
The ground is broken and construction is under way on the Great Wolf Lodge Water Park Hotel in Garden Grove. Kim Schaefer, CEO of Great Wolf Resorts led the crowd in a "howl," to get the event started. The 600 room hotel and water attraction is being built on Harbor Boulevard and will be part of the Grove District Anaheim Resort. Parents got a look at what can happen at a party where there is underage drinking. The demonstration was put on by the Garden Grove Drug Free Coalition. Drinking games, peer pressure, fights and consequences were all acted out to give parents a look at what can really happen. The Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership or G.R.I.P. program brought a group of young people to Ford Motor Company in Irvine. At risk kids who achieved good grades and perfect attendance from schools all over Orange County were treated to a day out by the Orange County District Attorney. Ford showed off their design studio, hi-tech equipment, and some cars of the future. The program stresses to these students the importnce of staying in school and avoiding gangs, alcohol and drugs. The City of Garden Grove recognized 2014 college graduates for their hard work and dedication. Mayor Bruce Broadwater and City Council Members congratulated the grads and stood for photos. Community Services Director Kim Huy emceed the event, held in the Community Meeting Center B Room. Gifts and certificates from elected officials were presented to the successful students. Paul Pham represented his brother Pierre who lost his life in a tragic motorcycle accident. May 24th, 2014 will mark the first Strawberry Festival 5K Run in the City of Garden Grove. This flat,sanctioned course should be a favorite of runners and walkers of all ages. Entrants will receive a tee shirt and a pancake breakfast to replace those carbs at the end of the run.
