On Saturday, July 28, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA
) presented Garden Grove Police Chief Joseph Polisar and accompanying members of the Garden Grove Police Department, with the Department’s fifth re-accreditation. The presentation took place during CALEA’s Summer Conference, July 25-28, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Considered one of the highest honors in law enforcement standards, the CALEA re-accreditation identifies Garden Grove’s internationally recognized level of professional excellence in law enforcement management and service.
The Department received its initial CALEA accreditation in 1988. Garden Grove continues to hold the distinction of being the only Southern California municipal police agency with CALEA accreditation.
During May 2007, a team of CALEA assessors performed on-site evaluations of the Department’s public safety management policies, procedures, practices, and activities, to determine the Department’s level of professional standards based on criteria set by the Commission.
Established in 1979, the Commission was formed as an independent accrediting authority by four major law enforcement executive associations, which represent about 80 percent of the nation’s law enforcement profession.
