The guava fruit fly, a serious exotic insect pest, was detected in the city on July 7, 2009 and July 9, 2009. The guava fruit fly is known to damage crops and various types of citrus that could potentially have negative economic effects to the agricultural industry; therefore, the California Department of Food and Agriculture has implemented an eradication program.
The eradication program will consist of bait stations on tree trunks, utility poles and other similar structures within Orange County. In addition, the program may include trapping, spraying, and fruit stripping. The California Department of Food and Agriculture will provide press releases to the general public and any resident whose property will be treated will be notified in writing prior to treatment.
