January 7, 2010

Increased pedestrian safety at the push of a button is coming soon to local schools. Installation of eight, new, pedestrian-activated crosswalk signals serving nearby elementary and intermediate schools is currently underway. Completion of the project is tentatively scheduled for April 2010. The $926,919 project is funded entirely by the Safe Routes to School state grant.

The signals allow pedestrians, waiting at crosswalks, to quickly stop traffic by pushing a button that changes green traffic lights to yellow, then to red.

Locations and corresponding school(s) receiving the signals are:
Lampson Avenue, west of Spinnaker Street—Lampson Elementary
Lampson Avenue, west of Monroe Street—Lawrence Elementary
Ward Street, west of Mast Avenue—Post Elementary
Russell Avenue, east of Verde Street—Sunnyside Elementary
Lampson Avenue, east of Sally Street—Violette Elementary
Trask Avenue, east of Roberta Circle—Doig Intermediate
Woodbury Road, east of Cork Street—Cook Elementary and Jordan Intermediate Ward Street, south of Florence Road—Paine Elementary.

Two other locations, not included in the grant, will receive signal modifications: Orangewood Avenue at West Street; and Orangewood Avenue at Knott Street. Macadee Electrical Construction, of Chino, was awarded the contract by the Garden Grove City Council on November 24, 2009.
