Vietnam War Museum Board Hosts Inaugural Fundraiser
The Vietnam War Museum of America Foundation (VWMAF) is hosting its first fundraising event in an effort to launch awareness to their mission of developing a Vietnam War Museum in Garden Grove. ‘Dine Under the Stars at The Moving Wall’ will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at Garden Grove Park, 9301 Westminster Avenue, beginning at 6:30 p.m. In conjunction with the dinner, the VWMAF is sponsoring a five-day visit of The Moving Wall to Garden Grove, from October 6 through October 10.
The Wall will serve as a backdrop for keynote speaker Joe Galloway, award-winning co-author of “We Were Soldiers Once … And Young.” The premier, 50-year war correspondent will highlight his experience documenting the now infamous battle of Ia Drang, the focus of his novel-turned-motion picture, “We Were Soldiers,” starring Mel Gibson. Galloway is the only civilian to be awarded the Bronze Star for Valor by the U.S. Army for his courageous actions during four tours of duty during the Vietnam War. Retired General H. Norman Schwarzkopf has said, “Joe Galloway if the finest combat correspondent of our generation - - a soldier’s reporter and a soldier’s friend.”
Event guests will also receive private tours of the Educational Center, temporarily housed in the Sports and Recreation Complex, showcasing Vietnam War-era memorabilia donated from those who served and their family members.
Ed Arnold, an anchor on KOCE-TV’s “The Real Orange,” longstanding announcer of the Crystal Cathedral’s “Hour of Power” and former sports broadcaster for KTLA News, will emcee the event. In his fifth decade of broadcasting, Arnold has earned well-deserved accolades for his tireless volunteer efforts on behalf of many local organizations, such as the Boys and Girls Club and the California Special Olympics.
Tickets to the ‘Dine Under the Stars’ event are $150 per person or $1,300 for a table of 10. Veterans are being offered a discounted ticket price of $75 per person. To R.S.V.P., please call the City of Garden Grove’s Office of Community Relations at (714) 741-5280.
