On Tuesday, May 9, 2017, 35 Garden Grove residents were recognized at the 5th annual Garden Grove College Graduates’ Reception, hosted by Mayor Steve Jones and the Garden Grove City Council. The event was held at the Garden Grove Community Meeting Center.
Over 150 guests attended the reception honoring local students. Degrees ranged from technology, science, and aerospace; to social work, hospitality, and criminal justice.
Mayor Steve Jones applauded the graduates on their degrees, encouraged them to become involved in the community, and use their knowledge and ideas right here in Garden Grove.
Garden Grove Police Captain Tom DaRe, a Garden Grove native and college graduate who has served his hometown police force for the last 26 years, spoke about the importance of receiving a college education and the opportunities that present themselves after graduation.
“You should take full advantage of opportunities, as well as create new possibilities. Your degrees will be essential as you begin your professional careers in what you have immense talent, calling, and passion for doing,” said Captain DaRe.
The event was also an opportunity for the graduates to network with local professionals in their related field, as well as representatives from the City’s Human Resources Department and the State of California’s Employment Development Department.
Each graduate was entered into an opportunity drawing for a chance to win an Apple iPad, a $500, and (2) $250 cash prizes. Sponsors for the event included title sponsor Garden Grove Shell #1, Signal Hill Petroleum, Credit Union of Southern California, Strawberry Festival Association, Kiwanis of Greater Garden Grove, Tu Camino Magazine, Women’s Division of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce, and individual sponsor and teacher, Mr. Nicholas Dibs.
After the reception, the graduates received a Community Spotlight during the regular Garden Grove City Council meeting.
