While rainy weather caused the postponement of the Police Department’s annual memorial nearly a month ago, sunny weather is expected for this Thursday’s rescheduled event. The 28th Annual Call to Duty Police Memorial takes place on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at 5:00 p.m., in front of Police Headquarters, at 11301 Acacia Parkway. The event is open to the public.
Police Chief Todd Elgin officiates his first memorial as the department’s newest chief, offering his personal homage to Garden Grove’s five officers killed in the line of duty: Myron Trapp, Andy Reese, Donald Reed, Michael Rainford, and Howard Dallies, Jr.
Guest speaker Clarke Paris, a US Navy veteran, retired police sergeant, and recognized author, will offer insight into the emotional challenges officers face in the line of duty. The Bolsa Grande High School Concert Choir will perform musical selections in honor of the occasion. And, The Nicholson Pipes and Drums bring back the traditional sounds of Scottish bagpipes to the memorial.
The ceremony includes the ringing of the Memorial Bell, 21-gun salute, riderless horse, and formal presentations to the surviving families.
Both directions of Acacia Parkway, from Garden Grove City Hall to 9th Street, and Civic Center Drive, from Garden Grove Boulevard to Acacia Parkway, will be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the day of the event.
