Sister City Website
Garden Grove, California, and Anyang, Korea, have formed a relationship to promote and foster understanding between the two city’s cultures. The Sister City Association of Garden Grove was formed in 1989 with the following goals:
- to promote understanding of other cultures through education and exchange programs;
- to encourage interest in and a value for different cultures;
- to develop a process whereby Garden Grove residents have the means and opportunities to learn about and communicate with people from foreign countries.
To assist the Sister City Association in meeting these goals, several activities are conducted each year. These include the Friendship Luncheon, Student Exchange Program, and Korean restaurant fundraiser in the fall.
Also encouraged are educational programs for students, such as the pen pal program, conducted in grades 1 through 8 in the Garden Grove Unified School District. High school students have the opportunity to visit Anyang, Korea, and stay with Korean families and students. Scholarships are offered by the Sister City Association to help defray the cost of travel. Art, music, and performing arts exchanges are promoted throughout the year.
Anyang History
With an ancestry dating back to the Sixth Century, the area known as Anyang, Korea, became a city in 1973. Situated outside of Seoul in a beautiful location of rolling hills, Anyang has become an industrial leader in the Korean economy since the Korean War.
The main products that are produced by Anyang include machinery, paper, medicine, film and textiles. In 1988, the city exported $783 million of goods. Yet despite its move to modernize, and because of its unique setting of rolling hills, the outskirts of Anyang contain beautiful forests and scenic farm lands.
Today, the City of Anyang is a fast growing community located on land three times the size of Garden Grove. It has many attributes including a fine educational system that features a multitude of schools and colleges to serve a population of over 600,000.
