Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in their communities.
Together we can help reduce crime by practicing the following:
- Get to know your neighbors and work together.
- Familiarize yourself with what is normal in your community.
- Develop a strong communication network between the community and the police department.
- Be the eyes and ears of the community and report suspicious activities.
- Have each other’s contact information to share suspicious activities.
Active participation can simply mean calling the non-emergency number when something is suspicious.
It is not citizens on patrol.
- Do not confront suspects.
- Do not confront criminals.
When you see suspicious behavior, report it immediately to the police department.
Why Neighborhood Watch?
- Over 40 million crimes are committed every year in the United States and the number is still increasing.
- There cannot be a law enforcement officer on every corner, so citizen involvement is essential to combat crimes.
- By cooperating with each other and the police department, neighbors make the best crime fighting teams and addressing crime in the community in the most effective way: BEFORE it happens!
How can I start a Neighborhood Watch?
All communities are different and will have varying needs. Some communities might find that having an on-line social network as a form of communication is ideal while others might find that having a monthly or quarterly meeting or newsletter is sufficient.

The Garden Grove Police Department encourages residents to participate in a Neighborhood Watch program in an effort to combat crime as a community.
