What is an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit)?

“Accessory dwelling unit” (also “ADU,” “second unit,” or “granny unit”) means an attached or detached residential dwelling unit situated on the same parcel as an existing primary single-family dwelling, which provides complete independent living facilities for one or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation. An accessory dwelling unit also includes an “efficiency unit” as defined in California Health and Safety Code Section 17958.1 and a “manufactured home” as defined in California Health and Safety Code Section 18007. An accessory dwelling unit may be established through (i) construction of a new detached structure, (ii) construction of an addition to an existing single-family dwelling, (iii) conversion of existing space in an existing single-family dwelling, or (iv) conversion of an existing garage or other accessory structure on a lot containing an existing single-family dwelling, provided it is set back at a distance sufficient for fire safety.

The City of Garden Grove has prepared information, as a courtesy, to educate property owners about ADUs. Below, you will find a copy of the City’s ADU Ordinance (Ordinance No. 2882), as well as informational handouts on ADUs in English, Vietnamese, Spanish, and Korean.

On August 10, 2017, the City of Garden Grove invited residents, contractors, and all interested persons to attend an open community informational meeting on Accessory Dwelling Units, at the Community Meeting Center. City Staff provided a presentation to help the community better understand the requirements and regulations related to ADUs. A copy of the PowerPoint presentation is available below in English, Vietnamese, Spanish, and Korean.
